It is important to properly clean and store embroidery patches and garments to keep them brand new and usable for a very long time. Although patches don’t get dirty easily, over time they will accumulate dust and before you know it, they already look old and maybe a little brownish. Here are a few tips on how to clean them.
Assess The Patch
Before you start cleaning, examine the patch for any loose threads, missing stitches, or damage. If you notice any issues, repair them first to prevent further damage during the cleaning process.
Spot Cleaning
If the patch only has minor stains or dirt, spot cleaning may be sufficient. Use a mild detergent or stain remover and a soft, clean cloth or sponge. Dampen the cloth or sponge with the cleaning solution and gently dab the stained area. Avoid rubbing vigorously to prevent damaging the embroidery. Rinse the area with clean water and pat it dry using a towel.
Remove Stains Carefully
If you have unfortunately stained your patches with sauces, grease, blood, or rust, for instance, use a rust remover made for home laundry. Use cotton with the solution and gently swab directly on the stain and soak in water. Repeat the steps until the stain is removed.
Hand Wash Gently
When you feel like it’s already time to take those patches to the bath, soak them for about 15 to 20 minutes in cold water with detergent. Don’t put them in the washing machine, as their threads might get tangled with other garments.

Pay attention to any heavily soiled areas and gently rub them with your fingertips. Avoid scrubbing your embroidery patches by rubbing the fabric together or using a brush. Also, avoid twisting the patch. It can damage not only the embroidery threads but the base fabric as well, causing a furry appearance.
Rinse
Once the patch is clean, drain the soapy water and refill the basin or sink with clean lukewarm water. Rinse the patch by swishing it gently in the water or running water over it until all the detergent is removed.
Dry Flat
To dry the patch, place it on a clean towel and gently press another towel on top to absorb excess water. Avoid wringing or twisting the patch, as this can distort the shape and damage the embroidery. Lay the patch flat on a towel in a well-ventilated area and allow it to air dry completely. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources, as they can fade or warp the colors.
Ironing (if needed)
If the patch appears wrinkled after drying, you can iron it on low heat. Place a thin cloth or pressing cloth over the patch to protect it, then gently press the iron over the cloth for a few seconds. Avoid using high heat or steam, as it can damage the patch.
