  5. The Different Types of Patches

The type of patch you need might actually depend on your design. There are certain characteristics for each kind, therefore it is important to know the types of custom made patches when deciding to create one. Here are a few definitions for each type:

The embroidered patch is the most popular type of patch. It uses solid colors and vector or digitalized designs and cannot use designs with tiny and intricate details. Moreover, it uses a special embroidery thread which is either polyester, rayon, or a blend of the two. The result is a textured patch with a 3D look. Text size should be at least 3.5mm.

Woven patches can use finely detailed multi-colored designs. They can achieve finer and smaller details that cannot be done with embroidery. They use thinner threads with no base and creates a smooth surface and appears flatter and thinner than embroidery. Text size should be atleast 2mm.

A sublimated patch is made by printing the design or photo directly onto a twill fabric which creates photo realistic, durable images. It can handle intricate designs, gradients, and fades. Thus, there is no limitation as to the number of colors and size of the letters.

Chenille patches are made with chenille yarn sewn in tightly woven woops for a 3-dimentional look and a furry texture. This type of patch is commonly used on varsity or letterman jackets, cheerleading sweaters and uniforms. It cannot use small and intricate details but is perfect for fun and quirky designs. Text size should be at least 2 inches.
